Shaky start

Phil Stacey, who was one of the better singers last week, goes first tonight and dedicates his performance to his command, Navy Band Southeast. He plays the Sept. 11 card, talks about how he joined up after the attacks to show his support for our country. Now, did I hear him wrong? Did he say he joined the military as a singer? Is that really what he did while serving our country? I mean no disrespect in any way, but does that even count as serving in the military? I mean, is singing what he did on the side or is that all he did? I'm very confused... but it makes no difference - whether he just sang or actually fought in combat, he was still brave enough to join - and that's something.

I wish he'd grow his hair out - I'm sure he's probably balding and that's why he's shaved it all off, but I think he'd look better with a little bit of hair - he looks a little gaunt and sickly with no hair.

Anyway let's get to the singing... he chooses John Waite's "Missing You." And it's OK. The song choice isn't great - it's kind of a rock song and I'm not sure his voice really lends itself to that kind of sound. It wasn't bad, but nothing about was sensational. And I'm a little nervous now because last week he was better than most of the guys and if that still holds true this week, this may be another bad show.

But all is OK with the world - Randy says it's hot and Paula comments on how great the tone of his voice is. Simon brings it back to reality and says that he's not jumping out on his chair, that Phil is completely unoriginal and just a very, very good karaoke singer. As is customary, Simon's a bit too harsh, but he has yet to tell a lie.

I like this blog, so I don't want to be disrespectful... but YOU are the only one who played the 9/11 card. He didn't mention it as a ploy to gain votes, but its impossible to ignore. I'm willing to bet he didn't think, "I'd like to pursue a singing career... I think I'll join the Navy!" But it doesn't really matter why he joined the Navy -- the point is that he did. And the guy's got talent, whatever your opinion of his dedication that night. It's awesome of him to at least recognize the men and women overseas protecting your right to having this blog, instead of making another selfish dedication only to the people who support him.

i dont think it is appropriate for someone who is an american idol blogger to comment on one of our serviceman's commitment to this country or the war on terror, particularly their personal reaction to 9/11. i was born and raised on long island, i lost somebody on 9/11, i know a man who spent months cleaning up at ground zero and now has an aggresive form of cancer from it, and will die. i was inspired by these men so i graduated college and moved away to work in federal law enforcement because of 9/11. i did not become a singer, i work hard everyday as a part (albeit small) of the war against terrorism. i took no offense to the the navy guy's dedication, as a matter of fact i took solace in the fact that he is not one of your selfish hollywood wannabe's who dedicated their performance to their stylist. i did take tremendous offense to the person that spends their day blogging about american idol questioning a member of our armed services' commitment and motivation to this great country and the people who call it home, good and bad. he joined for a reason, and every member of the armed services should be respected no matter what their role is.

Please let me clarify... I meant no disrespect toward Phil Stacey or his commitment to the military. I, too, know people who died on 9/11, and I, too, have family members in the military, whom I love dearly and support wholeheartedly. I did not at any point divulge my personal reaction to 9/11 - that sentiment is personal and not something I would write about in a blog. All I meant by my comments was that "American Idol" has decided to make the military Phil's "angle" on the show, like Lakisha has the single mom thing going and Sundance has his dad as a claim to fame. I shouldn't have worded it by saying that Phil played the 9/11 card - that was insensitive. I did make sure to say that I meant no disrespect and that regardless of what Phil does in the military and regardless of why he joined, it was still brave to do so. It was not my intention to offend anyone and if I did, please accept my apology.

perhaps a better "angle" would have been his love for long walks on the beach?

Playing music counted for me when I joined the Army 10 years ago as a musician and went to Basic Training with a bunch of medics. It also counted when Army musicians from my unit were putting their craft aside and pulling dead bodies out of the Pentagon after 9-11. It seems like it's not 'really' serving your country, but the 'real' troops that get deployed are always very appreciative of the entertainment value of military musicians. And FYI-musicians sometimes get deployed too. Just want people to be better informed, that's all!
