Why I voted for Melinda

Am I delusional? Stupid? A genius? Only the guy I see in the mirror each morning thinks the latter, but nonetheless, there is a reason I voted for Melinda Doolittle to get the boot.

Yes, she is a very good singer. Yes, there are at least 7 people who should go before her. But, she is not going to win. Nor should she. Here’s why:

1)I don’t believe her. I’m no Simon, but two weeks ago when she started crying, and the whole ‘I’ve never heard anything like that come out of my mouth’ routine, it was all an act. She has won enough singing contests in her past to know she can sing. She is playing us and I won’t stand for it.

2)She sounds like Aretha Franklin. While that is a compliment, it isn’t what the next American Idol should sound like. After the Taylor Hicks fiasco last season, this year’s winner will need to have a hipper, younger sound. Perhaps a Jordin Sparks.

3)It is too predictable. Remember when Chris Daughtry got the boot? It wasn’t right, but it made good TV. It is so obvious this year that there are three good singers (Melinda, Jordin and LaKisha), a bunch of kids with talent (Blake, Chris, and Chris), a weird bald guy and Sanjaya. There is no way Fox lets this play out without a twist.

That’s my theory anyway. In a few weeks if she is on stage with the balloons and Ryan, I was wrong. And I’m sure I will hear it from my fellow bloggers. In the meantime, I just may vote for her again next week.

What are you crazy! Melinda is one the best singers I have heard in a while! She is sweet and genuine, it is definitely not an act. She was overwhelmed last week from the applause, it made here special, because she is always in the background. You seriously need help! I think your brain is depleting because you do not get enough vegetables!

I agree with you.

Melinda is an exceptional and well-versed singer, but she ain't gonna win.

I'm an avid viewer, but have never voted for an American Idol. Jordin may be the one to bring me off the sidelines.

I agree to a point that Melinda's meekness is a bit much. She's very good and I like her a lot, but when she sang "As Long As He Needs Me", she almost lost it on the last note...very strained & almost off-key. I don't think she'll be the next American Idol.

You know Melinda's humility is an act? How do you know this? Are you equating the applause from a 500 people at a local theater ensemble performance to the applause of 5000 people for a solo performance? Maybe you speak from experience? But I think Melinda explicitly said she had never heard applause like that before for herself. She didn't say she couldn't sing. She sings for her food. Why would she say she can't sing? This post is like cold oatmeal with a puddle of sulfuric acid in the middle.

This blog sucks. You're an idiot. Let me type out the exact conversation for you...
Melinda, just watching you I just... I feel...what you're...you're just feeling so much joy... and it's exciting I feel I'm one big goosebump and I just am so excited for you because ...look at you... I mean, this is it for you... this is it for you...you-you-you're you're sailing through.
(crowd cheers)
Randy: Simon Cowell? Uhh, Simon? Simon?
Simon:What?
Randy:Are you , uh, at a loss for words? What's happening?
Paula:When you see her crying like that.
Simon:No, I'm sneezing. I'm sorry.
Randy: He's sneezing, yeah.
Simon: Umm, why are you- why are you crying,Melinda?
Melinda: I-
Paula:That's what touches me.
Melinda: I never heard anything like that for me;That was great.

I think that at this point, it is obvious that Melinda is quite sincere. Her family also appears to be made up of decent people. This is how humble, decent people behave. She will win if people consisently vote for her instead of "voting for the worst" and subjecting us to seeing Sanjaya each week... At this point, he doesn't even appear to be enjoying this. Last note...if anyone compares your singing to Aretha Franklin's, then you ought to be awfully proud...she's a legend with a enormous gift from God. Stop being so cynical.

May I add to the reasons why Melinda won't win?

Because she is very matronly, boring and stuck on the same type of songs. Our next American Idol needs spice, energy, and youth as well as beautiful vocals. Our next American Idol should be Jordin Sparks.

Haley is eye candy very hot and should stay until the very end because she can carry a note just like the rest of them. Melinda is ugly as sin, but has the best voice, it's true, but she is not an American Idol. She got the voice but nothing else. My vote would have to be Jordin Sparks. She has more of a whole package then any others in this competiton. Last year it should of been Catheren Mcvee not that grey headed smuck.

I think Sanjaya sucks and needs to leave to show . he's not a good singer and he's really ugly y is he still there he shouldn't win the show at all but chris richardson is the best and he's cute too which is a plus.

It ia ashame that there are some very good singers being voted off because some radio show is telling everyone to vote for Sangia when there are carrers at stake. The show this year is a joke dosen't everyone see what is going on the voters are making a laughing stock of this competition by leaving the worst singer I have ever heard on every week. If I were him I would vote myself right off the show and than watch how successful he becomes by being the first idol to realize that he cannot compete with real talent. This could be the fall of a great American make dreams come true show because Sangria is a NIGHTMARE!!!!!

I totally knew that melinda would not have won. She could have gone in the finale, but definately not win it. Her voice is fantabulous, but just too old and when I think of American Idol, I think of hip--not another Aretha Franklin--its just not what the show is really about. We don't need another gospel singer, or someone who preaches to God. You can make a song or two in your album, but don't focus on that because people will be annoyed by it. I do believe in God--just so all know that and I don't have anything against any of it. We seriously need a new, young, fresh, lively voice that's almost like Kelly since she is the first, and the best and the TRUE american idol. Melinda would get a contract anyway, but we really need someone who is going to stand out and be open and be exciting. Not a monotone boring kind of gal. Sorry Melinda--you just weren't the best in that...and an Idol is someone who is going to excite me, not bore me.

The problem with the voting system on "Idol" is that people are allowed to vote as many times as they wish. The number should be limited like it is on "Dancing With The Stars". This would limit all the teenyboppers who vote because they have a "crush" on the contestant and the idiots who vote because they want to be contrary and vote for the worst. Although Blake had some good stuff, there is no question that Melinda was the stronger singer and she should be in the finals with Jordan. But, I really think that Jordan is the best representative of the next American Idol and should be the winner. Her voice is beautiful and she has amazing poise for one so young. I just hope that people who vote wise up and do not vote for Blake over Jordan. That would really be a tragedy. America had better get it right next week!!

Jordin is pretty and young, that's what people are going by..as far as her voice and stage presence, she needs a more practice she doesn't seem comfortable when she sings and that is very important when you are talking about total talent. Someone called Malinda "ugly", they're very cruel this is not a beauty contest and she is very pretty her talent and vocals need not be a question she's got it all... Blake is more talented than Jordin as far as keeping a crowd entertained- and when he does focus on vocals this makes him a very well rounded singer/beat box guy... Overall, American Idol was a flop this year because of the hoax of Sanjaya winning over people who were so much more talented..Producer's please stick to your original winning format.

I think Melinda sounds more like Gladys Knight than Aretha. (In fact, she doesn't sound at ALL like Aretha!). That may have been part of the problem though. Melinda is an AMAZING singer but, to me, I see her as a throwback to the great R&B singers of the sixties and seventies. Like Taylor Hicks, I couldn't see where Melinda would fit in todays music scene. A sad comment on the state of the music business but arguably true. In any case, I hope she moves on the bigger and better.
