BETTE MIDLER!!!!!!
WOW!!! OK - I take back every bad thing I've said about "American Idol" in the past hour and a half. They've got BETTE MIDLER on the stage right now.
Oh my goodness and she's singing "Wind Beneath My Wings." I may cry - she's just unbelievable. I had the opportunity to see Celine Dion while I was in Vegas and I cried through most of that concert. I plan to see Bette Midler in that same theater when she takes over at Caesars and my feeling is that I will react in much the same way.
There's just something about watching someone so talented, so able to move an audience. It's incredible and touching and inspiring and a million other things.
This one song made my whole night - it made watching all this horrific filler worth it. I felt the same way last year when Prince took the stage and once again, "Idol" has topped itself. Bette Midler - geez, does it get any better?

Lol, I know the author was star struck, but Bette sounded horrible! Seriously.... WTF what that!?? It sounded like she was sucking in her stomach the whole time so she couldn’t let loose. She needs to get her neck done...just a little nip here and a tuck there. Sounded like crap.

Bette was awful. I had to turn the channel while she was on -- and it wasn't just her voice but what the hell was she doing with her arms? Trying to take flight? And to think she's taking Celine Dion's place in Vegas....

Sanjaya sounded better than Bette. Tony Bennett is 80 and sounded much better. She's lost something.

I give Better credit for not having or having just a little plastic surgery, but she just can't sing anymore. How you can say Barry Gibb lost his voice and say Bette didn't is beyond me.

She looks as good as she does at 61 because she has had tons of plastic surgery.
She started the song too low and, apparently, couldn't recover.

Well, it's nice to see people being so "human." I guess perfection is expected EVERY time a star gets up to sing. Everyone has a bad day from time to time and whatever reason(s) Bette had for not sounding that great (whether she was sick or otherwise) certainly does not mean she should "pull out" or stop singing. I think all of these self-proclaimed "critics" need to grow up or shut up.

Jeez.
She mucked up a bit, who cares. The woman's been off the road for 2 years, sounded like she had a sore throat and was obviously having trouble with the backing music (as you can see by her adjusting the volume control a few times).
Give her a break, the judges enjoyed it (yeah, Simon Cowell!) so it can't have been 'crap'.
As for the 'she needs surgery' comments - some people don't see the need to resort to artificially changing their looks to gain public approval, she's managed to do that herself over the past 40 years. Criticising her looks to create negativity towards her is really quite low.

I am worried about her. Something much be seriously wrong. A voice does not go downhill like that for no reason, and certainly not from HAVING A BAD DAY! That performance was more than a bad day. It was of serious concern. I bet the people that signed her in Legas are FREAKING OUT! We need to pray for her. It is very sad.

I'm with poodles. Something was seriously wrong. It wasn't a bad performance day, there was a struggle going on. Has she been ill lately? If that's the case than that would explain the performance and the response. This is not a put down, Prayer is definately in order.

For all the people who are attacking Bette.... what she does it not easy. Getting up and singing in front of millions of people is hard. You may be assuming it's all glitz and glamour and fun, but it's work. And sometimes you don't have a perfect day. Singers get sick and don't feel well, and sound reinforcement doesn't always happen as it should, but as a professional entertainer... the show goes on. You may feel like crap but you do you job and live up to your commitment to the producers. Everyone should cut her some slack. And as far as looks go, she looks pretty darn good for 61. I respect her as a professional singer and as noted below, everyone can have an off night -- unfortunately hers came in front of 40 million people. But it happens to the best of us.

It's so funny to hear people trashing her performance. It means most people think she has always been a really good singer, because when she doesn't sound as great as she always does people think there is something wrong or maybe it's age...well, it could be. But let's face it...do you think those big CEOs would sign a 2 year contract if they didn't know what they were doing? Come on...the performance was probably supposed to be part of the marketing around the deal, and, for sure, there was something wrong...maybe it was a last minute thing, maybe she had a soar throat, maybe she had a bad day...but certainly she hasn't "lost" her voice. You don't loose your voice in one year out of the blue, after 40 years singing. (she recorded an album less then a year ago, remember? She was promoting it all over the place, singing LIVE AND WELL) And for her looks...whatever she is doing to maintain it,she looks great. People who criticize this are hipocrats, because 90% of people would spend a lot of money on their looks if they could afford it...

I think she was ill because I've heard not so long ago and she hit every note. Cut the gal some slack. I'd like to see any of you do better. It's funny how people who've probably never uttered a note on an amateur or professional level can be so judgemental.

For those of you who did not see Inside Edition the next day. Bette indicated she was notified a day and half before performing on American Idol. That to me folks, was some advanced notice. Hah! As usual, Bette pulled the performance off like a real trooper. So you see... She's alive and well and still The Divine Miss M! The DIVA of Divas.

Bette was friggin amazing .. and to all those people who call themselves a so called 'bette' fan when talking to nasty about her you should be ashamed ... im so upset to hear all these horrible horrible comments .. she looked amazing and sings as good as she usually does BRILLIANT ... 100% BRILLIANT!! ... also if ya reading this bette DO NOT PULL OUT OF VEGAS WE LOVE YA!!!!!
